Chad Rabinovitz is the Artistic Director of Constellation Stage & Screen (Bloomington, IN). He has directed more than 100 productions across the country (and produced nearly 300), focusing primarily on new and contemporary plays and musicals. He has managed multiple new works companies, arts fairs and events, and created the acclaimed Adirondack Film Festival. Chad was the Producing Artistic Director of Bloomington Playwrights Project for 13 years (2009-2022) until the company successfully and innovatively merged with another theater company (Cardinal Stage) and a film company (Pigasus Institute) to create Constellation Stage & Screen - the first hybrid company of its kind.
Under Rabinovitz’s tenure, the Bloomington Playwrights Project underwent what Bloom Magazine calls “a near miraculous renaissance.” Taking the helm of a theatre nearing six-figures in debt, Rabinovitz quintupled its subscribership, erased all debt, vastly expanded its education program, completed a full-building renovation, doubled the operating budget, increased its community partnerships, greatened the company’s national renown, and sold more tickets in a single season than in its 40 year history. Leading the theater for 13 years, Rabinovitz led BPP to three additional major milestones: purchasing its building, fostering a merger to help create a company more than 5 times its size, and selling out every single performance of every production for 5 straight years.
From 2014-2021, he was the only artist in the United States to have simultaneously served as the Producing Artistic Director of two theaters devoted to new works when he also led the Adirondack Theatre Festival (Glens Falls, NY). At ATF, Chad grew attendance from 5,700 to over 14,000. He doubled subscribership, broke numerous box office records, introduced innovative children’s programming, and produced multiple best-selling-selling shows in ATF’s history. Chad also created the nationally recognized Adirondack Film Festival, which under his 5-year leadership became a FilmFreeway Top 10 Festival (out of 9,000).
Specializing in developing new works, Rabinovitz has fostered and directed/produced premieres from such prominent playwrights as: Steven Sater, Burt Bacharach, Alex Brightman, Dan Castellaneta, Deb Lacusta, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeff Daniels, Craig Wright, Greg Kotis, Paris Barclay, Drew Gasparini, Kooman & Dimond, Scott Alan, Christy Hall, Michelle Kholos Brooks, Kelly Younger, Jon Marans, Israel Horovitz, Jeremy Schonfeld, Wendy MacLeod, Michael Healey, Nicole Parker, Chris Jeffries, Henry Murray, Stephen Massicotte, Carner & Gregor, and Greg Kalleres. Rabinovitz is also known for working closely with magicians to direct and develop their acts, working most prominently with renowned magicians, Max Major, Simon Coronel (World Champion of Magic), Shoot Ogawa (World Champion of Magic), and directing the National Tour of Penn & Teller’s Foolers. Chad (and his directing work) is featured in the documentary, ON YOUR MARC, starring Marc Summers.
In 2020, Rabinovitz created In the Box Entertainment, the world’s first season of interactive virtual theatre. It went on to entertain more than 8,000 patrons across 37 states and in countries across the globe. During one of the toughest times in theatre history, In the Box Entertainment generated a profit for BPP & ATF as well for the 25 theatres that licensed and presented the shows that Rabinovitz directed.
For his achievements, Rabinovitz was the recipient of Bloomington’s Manager of the Year Award, the Downtown Revitalization Award, Bloomington’s Attraction of the Year Award, Ivy Tech’s Community Partner Award, and was honored with being on the cover of Bloom Magazine where he’s referred to as “a visionary artistic director, savvy businessman, and inspirational leader.” He was named one of the 100 Reasons to Love Bloomington and was honored with Bloomington’s 10 Under 40 award as well as Glens Falls’ 20 Under 40 award in the same month.
Rabinovitz served as a management consultant for Prima Theatre (Lancaster, PA), and has also been an Adjunct Professor of Theatre Management at Indiana University and a member of the Indiana University Theatre Circle’s Board of Directors. He has been a script reader for the Eugene O’Neil Theatre Center and The Playwrights’ Center and has held the title of Artistic Director at Crested Butte Mountain Theatre, Artistic Associate at Westport Country Playhouse, Assistant Managing Director at Northern Lights Playhouse, and Education Director/Artistic Associate at Greenbrier Valley Theatre. He also regularly serves as the Sponsor Liaison for the Times Square NYE Ball Drop event as well as the Location Manager for Discovery Channel’s Puppy Bowl.
